4th International Symposium on Surface Protective Coatings SSPC-2006 and more...

The Indian paints manufacturing industry is in direct needs to develop technologies for the high-end specialized applications of its end-users. The industry should look forward to innovate and develop solvent-free coatings, nanotechnologies in coatings, and fireproof coatings in an effort to reduce the increasing number of industrial hazards. These issues were brought forth at the International Symposium on Surface Protective Coatings, recently organized by the Society for Surface Protective Coatings (SSPC) India, in Mumbai. A report…

Pipelines are the most effective and efficient way of distribution of fuels such as oil, gas and water for the chemical industry. The developments in findings related to natural gas have created an increasing demand for pipelines for transportation across the length and breadth of the country. This has resulted in extreme challenges being faced by the designers and consultants in designing these pipelines, as they have to be operational for about 35-50 years.

With a view to educate the end-user industry on the latest developments in high performance coatings, and to increase the interaction between the industry and the academia, SSPC India organized the fourth symposium on Surface protective coatings' at Hotel Leela, in Mumbai recently.

Inaugural Ceremony
The inaugural function was organized with great aplomb, in the dignified presence of various industry doyens from the paints manufacturers and the users industry. The symposium was inaugurated by Mr. K Venkataramanan, President Operations, Larsen & Toubro (L&T). Mr. H M Bharuka, Managing Director, Kansai Nerolac Paints and Mr. Jalaj Dani, President international business group, Asian Paints, were the guests of honour at the opening ceremony.

In his welcome address, Prof. A S Khanna, Chairman, SSPC India, appraised the participants about the achievements of SSPC over the past four years. He briefed the delegates about the focus on high performance coatings in the chemical industry, which he termed as almost negligible. He further stressed on the need for strengthening R & D in high performance coatings, so that the Indian Industry can manufacture a major portion of these high performance coatings requirements in India in an effort to reduce the import of these expensive industrial coatings. Prof Khanna also requested the industry to support R & D in educational institutions and encourage R & D by creating some research awards for deserving organizations. Mr. Vivek Natu, Secretary,

SSPC India, then elaborated on the various technical sessions and activities scheduled at the symposium over a period of three days. The chief guest and other dignitaries later inaugurated the symposium by the traditional way of lighting the lamp.

Industry Pledges
The dignitaries on the dais representing the industry were vocal in their prompt support towards SSPC's cause behind the development of surface protective coatings in India.

In his inaugural address Mr. Venkataramanan elaborated on the significance of paint coatings and their applications in the industry, and informed that L & T alone uses more than Rs 100 crore worth of paints, with a majority of them being high performance coatings. He further reiterated the need for training

Mr. Bharuka spoke as a representative of the paints industry, and admitted that the paints industry needs a strong R & D base to develop. As a first step in that direction, he announced an award of Rs 50,000 for the company undertaking the best R & D initiatives in paints & coatings, beginning from the forth coming SSPC symposium. Mr. Dani further endorsed Mr. Bharuka's point of view, and appreciated SSPC's efforts towards, creating a platform to be shared simultaneously by paint manufacturers, applicators, contractors and R & D personnel.

Technical Sessions
The speakers at the technical seminars brought forth key issues currently facing the industry, and also briefed the delegates on the newer technologies that could provide an impetus to applications of protective coatings in India.

The technical sessions witnessed a strong participation from the industry, with more than 300 participants representing various, R & D personnel, paint manufacturers, applicators, suppliers and contractors. The industry audience had healthy interactions and discussions with the speakers related to topics on high performance coatings in 11 different technical sessions, spread over a period of three days. The technical sessions included more than 40 technical papers on topics ranging from pipeline coatings, waterborne coatings, fire protective coatings, advanced coatings like polyurea, coil coatings, coatings for wind mills, inspection and safety aspects in paint coatings, offshore applications, nanotechnology in coatings, and high performance coatings, covering various industries such as oil and gas, wind mills, flooring, high durability coatings, etc.

The technical sessions saw active participation from foreign experts too, with a strength of more than 20 speaks. Some of the prominent foreign speakers included Dr Sankara Papavinasam from CANMET, Canada; Richard Holliday from International Paints, UK; Christopher Dorsey and Rainer Kuprion from Goldschmidt TIB GmbH, A Momber from AG Muehlhan, Germany; Dr Pells, Mulkh Raj, and James White from UK; Michael Osborne from Shangai; and Smrithi Kumar from Q-Panel, US.

Exhibition
A concurrent exhibition was also held along with the technical seminars, with delegates getting a hands-on opportunity to witness some of the latest technologies in the coatings industry. More than 26 companies displayed their products and technologies over a span of three days.

Some of the prominent exhibitors were Kansai Nerolac Paints Ltd; GE Bayer, Germany; ITW Chemin; VCM Polyurethanes Pvt Ltd; Nukote Coating Systems, Dubai; Chemin Coatings Pvt Ltd; and Redemaco Engineering Pvt Ltd, among others.

The road ahead…….
The collective opinion of the speakers and the delegates at the symposium was that there is a need to boost the R & D activity in paints and coatings technology in India. It was cited that paint companies should take the onus of contributing 1-2 per cent of their profits for developments in paints technologies.
